Boston Foundation receives its largest bequest.
May 7, 1959
At his death, Albert Stone bequeaths $17 million to what is at the time called the Permanent Charities Fund. An 82-year-old bachelor, Stone lived at 152 Bay State Road and grew wealthy through investments and real estate. He maintained a small office in the Barristers Building in Pemberton Square. After his death and news of the bequest, the Boston Globe calls him “A Man Nobody Knew,” and quotes the building’s janitor, who said “Nobody knew what he was doing in there. I never saw anybody go in to see him, and never heard anyone ask for Mr. Stone.” Stone’s final bequest totals nearly $20 million.
